Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. 24 Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.
When I decided to become serious with God, I started reading the Bible every day. That is when I found out that the above words of Matthew appealed to me very much, and became my “banner” for the next few years; put it this way… this was my favorite verse for a long time! Jesus teaching, Jesus preaching, Jesus healing!
It never stopped being a favorite verse, but I stopped thinking about it very much since I started putting it to practice! Or at least… to some degree…
Jesus is the firstborn of many brothers (that includes sisters, but there is no gender in the Kingdom of God so we don’t need to repeat that all the time). He invited us to be like Him, and do the works that He was doing while He was on the earth. So I felt that one of the reasons that these words appealed so much to me, was because I was also called to teach, to preach and to lead people to the Lord from whom they can receive healing.
Another important reason that these words appealed to me was because Jesus was preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom, not a “gospel of man’s individual salvation”. We have spoken extensively in several articles about the differences between the (humanist) “gospel of man’s personal salvation” versus the Biblical Gospel of the Kingdom of God, so we shall not do it here again — except for one point relevant to healing:
The “gospel of man’s personal and individual salvation” does not necessarily include healing. In fact the “gospel of salvation” leaves out the most of what the Kingdom of God is about. What is relevant to our article today is that there are people who believe in salvation through Jesus, but fail to see that Jesus offers so much more than salvation of the soul from the eternal damnation in “the lake of fire”.
Jesus offers HEALING of our mortal bodies along with salvation of our soul(s)
In fact, healing is an important manifestation of the Kingdom of God on earth
I would like to start this new series of articles with this real story I experienced many years ago. A sister-in-Christ took me to her aging parents to minister healing to them. Her mother had lower back problems and her father was suffering in the stomach area. That man had been a living legend in a way, as he had been a fervent evangelist in his younger years, and I think he had also been a Pastor for a number of years, but was retired at the time that I went to their home.
After we had spoken about personal experiences that I had had with the Lord in my own life and in the lives of other people, I told them that the power of Jesus to heal them was available right there and then. At that point they both started reacting to something, which they proceeded to identify as like fire that had enveloped them.
As it is written, so it became real and manifest when the word of testimony with faith was spoken… among many scriptures that are suitable for this occasion, I would choose to quote another one of my favorites;
Hebrews 2:2-4 (slightly paraphrased to make sense here): – where the word of salvation is spoken, and is confirmed by those present who have experienced it, God manifests to bear additional witness through signs and wonders, diverse powers (which include healing), and distributions of the Holy Spirit (I have added “which include healing” for clarity).
The lady (the elderly mother with the lower back problems) said she felt like fire came down from above and entered her spine. So her back was very hot at that moment. The husband (the retired Pastor) said that suddenly his stomach area had become very hot and it felt like something was moving inside of him.
Both, their daughter who took me there, and I, started rejoicing and thanking the Lord for the visitation of His Spirit, who came like fire, to minister healing to this precious couple who had served the Lord throughout their lifetime.
The Presence of the Person of Jesus manifesting through the Power of His Spirit was so real and so overwhelming, that not only the aging couple could experience the fire in their bodies, but we could also feel that the atmosphere in the room had changed.
But… to my utter amazement and shock… the elderly man suddenly hardened his face, sat up on his arm-chair, pointed the finger right into my face, and with a very strict voice he said… it was supposedly a question, but what it really was… was a manifestation of a spirit-person who overtook him, and spoke through him… he “asked” me…
“Can you guarantee to me that Jesus wants to heal me”?
I was flabbergasted… led almost to despair… felt totally helpless… and of course speechless… I was just looking at him in utter unbelief that he actually said that, after the fire of the Holy Spirit had already been manifesting inside of him, and he had already heard his own wife saying that the fire was inside her spine…
The flow of the Holy Spirit was immediately and instantly quenched! The atmosphere of the room that had been filled with the Presence of the Person whom we had invited (Jesus) suddenly changed, and became like “cold”… like “dead”… (!)
That was the first time I experienced the spiritual manifestation of certain “spirit-persons” of the enemy camp from within respectable Christians who had played a leading role among the community of the born-again believers in Hellas (Greece).
It was the first time that I recognized in full measure the effect of (the systemic stronghold of) unbelief. It is a stronghold (that I have written a series of 5 articles about – pls ask if you have not read them,) which has the power to deceive God’s people so much, that they can miss the truth of the Scriptures, and, the very Presence of the Person (Jesus) whom they have believed in, and, served all their lives.
This series of articles is about Jesus healing, so I will not spend too much time on the identification of the enemy stronghold that produces unbelief that blinds (God’s) people so that “seeing they cannot see, and hearing they cannot hear”. I will only say these few words for reference, and to help some readers who may feel led to humble themselves and repent, so that they may be set free from the grip of this stronghold.
For such a man as the one I spoke about…
– who had been a fervent evangelist and brought many people to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ…
– who had been a Pastor who was feeding God’s sheep for years of faithful service…
– for such a good man to come to the point to doubt, deny, and oppose the truth of the Scriptures (in regards to the subject of healing), and reject the visitation of the Holy Spirit in the living room of his own home…
… one can only imagine how many antichrist influences must have been in operation to bring him to a place that even the reality of the Presence of the fire of the Holy Spirit could not bring him to the place to accept the gift of healing that God gave him/them….
And so I understood the Scripture that says about Jesus: Mark 6:5 So He was not able to do any miracles there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He was amazed at their unbelief. Now He was going around the villages in a circuit, teaching.
Even Jesus in the flesh was not able to overcome the stronghold of unbelief when people were/are given to it and allow it to manifest through them… how desperately sad…!
So, what was it that manifested in that room that had had the power to quench the fire of the Holy Spirit? Obviously I do not know for sure, but I estimate that it may have been a combination of: human wisdom, religion of dead works, pride of knowledge, the theology of the “gospel of salvation”, false doctrines, and the like… (I left “unbelief” out of this list, because unbelief is like a fruit – it is the outcome of such evils as the ones mentioned here; it is never the source).
Now, if I wanted to give a Biblical name to this antichrist operation and manifestation, it would probably be “the Prince of Greece” (Daniel 8:21, 10:20, 11:2, Zech. 9:13) but to keep this article focused and readable we shall say no more on this subject.
Note of clarification: I use the word “anti-Christ” in the original Biblical context, not in the modern-day perverted, extra-biblical use of the word. In the Bible “anti-Christ” does not mean “against-Christ” but “instead-of-Christ”. Ε.g. an idol, physical or intellectual, bearing the name of Christ is a dead form instead of the living person of Christ.
Also, as “christ” comes from “anointing” (“chrisma”), an “antichrist” activity may be “instead-of-the-anointing”. That means that God’s people who are deceived by antichrist influences mainly through the intellectual perception of invisible concepts about “God”, fall prey to false doctrines — which substitute human-generated concepts about “God” for the real person of Jesus — which by default lack the power and fire of His Spirit.
Rather than try to understand more of the enemy’s activities, we shall now turn our eyes on Jesus and His will to heal! That elderly, retired Pastor did not know if God wanted to heal him, so he rejected the healing fire of the Holy Spirit; but Jesus gives us a different perspective on this… He reveals His identity!
Luke 7:19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” 20 When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ”
21 And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight. 22 Jesus answered and said to them,
“Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.
23 “And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”
Let’s make sure we understand this… when Jesus was asked to reveal His identity, the first thing He did was NOT to give an answer with words, but to do works with power…
“‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ and that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight”.
After He had answered with action, He then proceeded to also say the words: “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”
Is it the goodwill of the Lord to heal? ABSOLUTELY YES!
Not only He is willing to heal, but the above report says that Jesus presented healing as part of His Name and identity! In fact, the very concept of “salvation” is not limited to the salvation of the soul from eternal damnation – the Bible shows that God uses the concept of salvation also for the healing of the flesh (will not go in depth on this now).
Is everyone healed all the time through faith in Jesus? Regrettably not…
“If God wants to heal everyone through faith in Jesus, then why so many people who believe in divine healing have not been healed?” This is why to speak about “Jesus Healing” we need a series, not just an isolated article. Through this series we hope to provide a few answers, and help enlarge the scope of our understanding of this subject, which is not as simple as we would have liked it to be.
A few testimonies of healing:
-> In May 1996 I was healed of allergic asthma which had been so bad that on a few occasions I nearly suffocated to death. God healed me when the Pastor of the church I attended at that time prayed for me.
-> In May 1999 I was healed of scoliosis of my back, which was so bad that I could not stand for long without having pains. God healed me when a visiting preacher from the UK prayed for me after a church service where he had preached. As the fire of God came upon me, everyone present could hear my bones cracking as they were sliding back into proper alignment.
-> In August 2001 Evi (my wife) was healed of dislocated vertebrae and split discs; she was supposed to undergo spinal surgery, but the Doctors could only give 50% possibility for restoration. There was still 50% possibility she might spend the rest of her life on a wheel-chair. After 24 hours of fasting, we prayed together and she stood up to walk after 5 weeks that she had been bed-ridden.
-> In January 2016 one of my brothers was healed of lung cancer. When we prayed for him, the Lord showed that it was a case of generational iniquity that had manifested. We brought his case before the Judge in the “Courts of Heaven” (see end note 1), and cancer disappeared from my brother, leaving no traces behind.
-> In August 2016 my 86 y.o. father was restored after two strokes that had left him partially paralyzed. After we prayed extensively for the forgiveness of generational iniquity as we felt led by the Lord, and after we had broken curses coming against him, he woke up the next morning fully restored.
The list of testimonies of God healing people that I have personal knowledge of, is very long. Some of those healings have taken place in our House of Prayer, “Shalom Center Athens”. Other healings took place when I was ministering in other places, mainly in other countries. Some of them took place at home.
We give all the praise, honor and thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ who is alive today as He has been since the day He was raised from the dead. The power that raised Him from the dead is still with us today through the Presence of the Holy Spirit, when His fire manifests. His goodwill is to bring healing!
